How do task due dates and times work?
Last verified October 18, 2026
A task's due date can carry an optional time. If you only set a date, the task turns late at your team's default due time (11:59 PM unless changed) in the team time zone, both set under Settings, then General.
Set a due date
- Open Tasks and click a task to open its panel.
- In the Due row, pick a date.
- Optionally pick a time in the box that appears next to it.
Two shortcuts sit under the date: Tomorrow, and Next meeting, which sets the due date to the day of the next event on your schedule. In the List view you can also click a task's due date to change it in a small popover, which has a Clear due date button.
A due date can't be earlier than the task's start date.
When does a task turn late?
| You set | Late after |
|---|---|
| A date and a time | That time on that date |
| A date only | The team's default due time on that date |
Only the second case uses the team setting, so changing it later doesn't move tasks where someone picked their own time.
Change the team's default due time and time zone
You need the Manage settings permission.
- Go to Settings, then General.
- Find Time zone and due times.
- Choose a Team time zone and a Default task due time.
- Click Save.
The time zone matters beyond tasks. It's also what keeps a weekly meeting at the same clock time on both sides of a daylight-saving change. If no zone has been saved, the page says "Not set yet" and the schedule treats every time as UTC until you save one.
Due dates elsewhere
- Open tasks with a due date can appear in your personal calendar feed as all-day "[Due]" events. See How do I add our schedule to Google or Apple Calendar?
- Adding an action item from a meeting's Task agenda sets its due date to that meeting's day.
